Easter Llama

This is Llavinia the Easter llama, I made her for my best friend as a special Easter present. I made the llama from a project in the last issue of Mollie Makes magazine, the templates included three different types of faces and different sized flowers so I chose my favourite face and arrangement of flowers. I used a very fluffy white felt for the body to make it look like a woolly coat. I used felt in candy pastel colours for the flowers, I needle felted two pieces of the same colour felt together to make the felt thicker and a bit sturdier. This was because the felt was quite thin and delicate so it probably would have fallen apart when I cut the flowers out! To embellish the flowers I sewed on some seed beads and sequins and added some embroidery to the petals. I embroidered the petals and the embroidered the face to add details. I also needle felted two layers of felt together to make the fringe.

I also made a gift box to put the llama in. To do this I drew a box shape on a piece of thick cardboard, cut it out and then stuck it together with double sided tape. I then covered it with old book pages, I also attached this with double sided tape because this prevents the paper from wrinkling. To decorate the box I ripped up patterned paper and stuck small pieces to the lid of the box. I also punched out tag shapes from different coloured card and then I wrote 'EASTER' on them in a biro. I threaded them onto a piece of coloured yarn and then attached them to the box. I glued on a felt rabbit and cut out flowers from a piece of patterned paper and glued them on as well. I attached two lengths of ribbon to the box using two flower shaped brad pins. I dabbed the raw ends with PVA glue to stop them fraying and tied the ribbon in a bow to close the lid of the box.

To go in the box I made a mini cushion from a piece of floral fabric. I machine stitched the cushion and then stuffed it. I sewed a button (a Liberty button as well, this is a luxury llama of course!) on to the middle of the cushion. Now the Llavinia the llama has a comfortable cushion to relax on! I think that this little llama makes a lovely alternative to an Easter egg!

Just a quick post but I thought you might like to see my sewing spool rack that I bought from The Makery. Its a brilliant way to display your spools of thread and now I can easily see which colours I have got! http://www.themakeryonline.co.uk/our-shop/tools-notions/i-love-sewing-spool-rack-lge/

Ribbon Spool

This ribbon spool came from The Makery http://www.themakeryonline.co.uk/ and is a brilliant way to display my 'handmade by me' ribbon which I showed you a few posts ago. I now need to buy some more for my some of my other ribbon! It is displayed on top of a shelf alongside other crafty items including a cross stitched pin cushion that I made from a free gift given with Cross Stitcher magazine several months ago

Mollie Makes Crocheted Rose

This is my completed crochet rose that came as a free gift with Mollie Makes this month. If you haven't bought this month's Mollie Makes (issue 12) yet then you really need to get out to the shops. In my opinion this month it is a particularly good issue, there's lots of inspiring ideas and the free gift is brilliant! The kit to make up the rose also came with a brooch pin, not sure if I'll use it as a brooch though, I think I'll add it to my growing pile of crocheted flowers and have a think about it...

PVC Bracelet

I made this bracelet with a PVC tube bracelet from Bijoux Beads, the PVC tube bracelets can be bought here: http://bijouxbeads.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_copy_of_copy_of_Peony___Lime_Earrings.html. You buy the bracelet already made up and ready for you to add beads to, the PVC tube is soft so it can be cut easily with scissors to adjust the size. I added a few large ceramic and glass beads also bought from Bijoux Beads, it was really quick and simple to make but I'm so pleased with the result that I'm now planning to buy a few more of the PVC bracelets so that I can make several more in co-ordinating colours.

Painted Bird House

When I bought this bird house it was just a plain wooden shape, so I painted the whole thing white and then I added detail with gouache paints. I made a stencil for painting the leaves and to paint the berries I used a very small paintbrush. It originally had a piece of string at the top to hang it from but I decided to remove it because I wanted to put it on a shelf instead.

Washi Tape

I have seen a lot of washi tape in craft shops and have always wanted to get some but it is so expensive for only one roll! So here is a way to make your own washi tape as seen on the Mollie Makes blog http://molliemakes.themakingspot.com/blog/tutorial-tuesday-homemade-washi-tape. I made my washi tape from small strips of fabric from http://www.cottonpatch.co.uk/, you can buy charm packs of material from The Cotton Patch which contain small squares of different patterned material. I used a Tilda and a Tanya Whelan charm pack to make these strips of washi tape. A very quick and inexpensive way of making washi tape!

Egg and Bacon Cupcakes

This evening I have been cooking savoury cupcakes! These egg and bacon cupcakes actually contain cheese as well. There is a recipe in Cupcake Magic by Kate Shirazi which tells you how to make them. They are delicious and are a nice alternative to sweet cupcakes. I would definitely recommend buying the book and giving them a go! They are perfect with salad and slices of bread for a lovely Sunday night tea!

Spring Rabbit

I know its not properly spring yet but how could I resist showing you this spring rabbit! I made it from a pattern in Crafting Springtime Gifts by Tonne Finnanger. For the body of the rabbit I used a plain cotton fabric and just look at those cute gingham ears! My rabbit is probably the best dressed rabbit in town in a brushed cotton pinafore, trousers and even a little hat! I used a decorative stitch on my sewing machine and a brightly coloured thread to embellish the clothes. A sweet little face has been added, she has french knot eyes and a satin stitch nose and a subtle bit of colour has been added to the cheeks with a red pastel. This little spring rabbit is very happy here, relaxing on a nice comfy chair with two handmade cushions!

Liebster Award

I have been very kindly awarded the Liebster Blog award by Nikki Love at www.butterflyintheblossomtree.co.uk/ , take a look at her blog, she makes lovely handmade cards. The Liebster Blog award is given to blogs with under 200 followers. It is awarded to help bloggers gain more followers. The rules of the Liebster blog award are that the recipients of the award then pass it on to five more blogs.

So after much searching for deserving bloggers to nominate for the award (trust me it wasn't easy picking, there are so many brilliant bloggers out there) , these are the five that I have chosen:

1. http://charliesewsstuff.blogspot.com/

2. http://elliemagpie.blogspot.com/

3.http://ninjanails.com/

4. http://evajeanie.blogspot.com/

5. http://lovethebluebird.blogspot.com/

To the five recipients of the award: Now I hope that you enjoy nominating five other blogs that you find interesting and you are asked to link back to my blog in the post where you will pass on the award. I'm not sure if my explanation is very good, so if its not clear or I have completely confused you, take a look at Nikki's explanation here http://butterflyintheblossomtree.co.uk/2012/03/liebster-award/

Well done to these bloggers, I love reading your blogs and I look forward to reading more posts in the future!

Decorated Boxes

For ages I have had two of those gold shiny cardboard boxes that you can get from most craft stores knocking around. I wasn't too keen on their shininess, so I decided it was time to make a use for them. So using patterned paper and PVA glue I covered the boxes. I then glued on small buttons and diamante gems in a heart shape on top of each box. I also wrote 'Pins' in the middle of one of the hearts. As you can probably guess I use this box to store pins in! In the other box I store brad pins although my supplies of these are looking rather depleted at the moment! I hope this gives you an idea of how to decorate an unused box.
